P.E. & SPORT

Physical education and school sport, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is a unique and vital contributor to a pupil’s physical development and well-being. Consequently, PE and school sport are highly valued at Westdene and are at the heart of the school. PE at Westdene aims to provide an enjoyable, challenging and physically active programme with opportunities for every student to develop physically, socially, emotionally, morally and cognitively.

Within the curriculum all pupils are offered two PE lessons per week. In the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, the primary focus is to develop children’s fundamental movement skills. At Key Stage 2, there is still a large focus on the development and refinement of children’s movement skills, as well as a focus on tactical understanding, the qualities and attributes needed for sports leadership and the benefits of leading a healthy and active lifestyle.

Our PE curriculum is complemented by an outstanding range of traditional, new and alternative sporting activities before, during and after school. We aim to cater not only for the students interested in playing competitive sport but also for those who wish to participate on a recreational basis.

Please see the Clubs page for a list of activities going on this term. In addition to these clubs, we have a very full intra-school and inter-school competitive sporting calendar and regularly enjoy success in many of the competitions we enter.

We also have close links to several local sports clubs, including Brighton Rugby Club, Brighton Baseball Club, Sussex County Cricket Club and Brighton & Hove Albion.

WESTDENE SPORTS PREMIUM

Impact of the School Sport Premium at Westdene Primary School

Westdene Primary School believes that pupil’s regular participation in physical education plays a vital role in their overall development and is an important factor in maintaining our children’s well-being. Sport has the amazing capacity to improve children’s self-confidence and allows them to accomplish great things outside of the class room. This helps to form well rounded individuals in our student body, who understand that regular exercise and healthy eating are important factors to a healthy and happy lifestyle.

At Westdene, we are continuing to implement the PE and Sports Premium funding to extend and enhance school sport provision and build capacity amongst the staff team. The Sports Premium funding has enabled us to offer further enrichment opportunities for our pupils and we are proud of the extensive programme of activities on offer to children throughout the school year, before school, during the day and after school. The funding has enabled us to provide specialist provision and offer professional development opportunities for teachers to ensure quality teaching and learning.

In addition to our broad and balanced PE curriculum which covers the statutory needs of the National Curriculum, our extra-curricular activities allow a large percentage of the school population to take part in new and popular sports before and after school.
