SCIENCE AT WESTDENE
A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world. Scientific advancement changes our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils are taught the essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Pupils are encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena.
The National Curriculum for Science aims to ensure that all pupils:
- develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
- develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
- are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
SCIENCE IN THE CLASSROOM: SCIENCE WEEK
Our Science Week this year focused on environmental issues and exploration of the natural World.
With daily WOW! tasks, the children explored a range of scientific concepts through experiments and investigations. Through activities like making ice-cream, creating lava lamps, exploring 'wonky fruit and veg', working on the school allotment, and designing windmills the pupils were able to get really hands on in their science work.
A planetarium visit took over the main hall for all of our children in Year 4 and Year 5 to visit; we had fantastic reviews from the children and this experience will support their Space topic this year and next.
All pupils were able to participate in an interactive science exhibition based on 'Light and Solar Energy' which led to lots of fun exploration and questions.
Partnership with Sustrans
We also got to spend a day outdoors with the Safer Streets project and visitors from Sustrans, whereby the children explored local air quality through the study of lichens, improved their bike skills and reclaimed the roads around the school for the day with some chalked street art.
